Two Types of Hikers

How To Hike

| Read in 3 minutes

We want you to have the best possible hiking and camping experience. In this case, one size does not fit all. Over the years, we’ve noticed two extremes of forest adventurers. The first type brings everything—a 65-liter backpack loaded with three changes of clothes, a collapsible stool, salt and pepper shakers and maybe even the kitchen sink. With 50 pounds on their backs, these folks can only hike so far, and they’re okay with that.

The other type of camper travels light, with small backpacks that carry no more than 25 pounds. They approach the experience as a cross-country runner might—seeing every additional pound they carry as a disadvantage. These weekend warriors may not even bring a tent, planning to sleep under the stars.

Yosemite hikers are not the only folks who enjoy La Guita’s healthy hiking meals.

And, of course, lots of overnight hikers fall somewhere in between these two extremes. There is not one right way to experience the wilderness; it depends on experience and personal preference. A person who carried the heavy backpack in may choose to travel lighter on the next camping trip. Conversely, one who brought the bare minimum may have really missed the tent and that extra pair of socks, not to mention additional healthy food.

What makes you happy? Is it hiking as far as you can per day and then relaxing over a crackling campfire with a good meal and great conversation? Is it meandering through the woods, examining every plant and tree and creature large and small? Maybe it’s getting to the campsite as quickly as you can and zoning out amidst the natural world. Different strokes for different folks.

You don’t have to spend your life in the city, as vibrant and noisy and challenging as it might be. You can breathe fresh air while clearing your mind and enriching your soul as you walk on trails that may have been traveled by adventurers hundreds of years ago. And if you can enjoy one of our organic meals while you do it, it’s not a requirement to get the most out of the experience, but we appreciate it.
